How Often Should You Service an Electric Vehicle?

One of the biggest selling points of electric vehicles is lower maintenance costs. And it's true — EVs have far fewer moving parts than gas vehicles and eliminate oil changes, spark plugs, timing belts, and exhaust systems entirely. But "less maintenance" doesn't mean "no maintenance." Here's a complete EV service schedule for drivers in Port Coquitlam and the Tri-Cities.

Every 10,000–12,000 km: Tire Rotation

Tire rotation is the single most important regular service for an EV. Because EVs are heavier and deliver torque instantly, tires wear faster and more unevenly than on a gas vehicle. Most manufacturers recommend rotation every 10,000–12,000 km — significantly more often than the 12,000–15,000 km interval typical for gas cars.

Tesla is explicit about this: the owner's manual recommends tire rotation every 10,000–12,000 km. Skipping rotations leads to uneven wear, shorter tire life, and in some cases handling issues. On a vehicle that's already harder on tires than a comparable gas car, staying on top of this interval pays for itself in tire longevity.

Every 2 Years: Brake Fluid Exchange

This surprises many EV owners: brake fluid still degrades on schedule, regardless of how rarely the friction brakes are used. EV regenerative braking handles most deceleration, which means brake pads last much longer — but brake fluid still absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and reduces performance in hard braking situations.

Most manufacturers, including Tesla, Toyota (for the Prius and RAV4 Prime), and Hyundai/Kia (for the Ioniq and EV6 lines), recommend brake fluid replacement every 2 years. This is a calendar interval, not a mileage one.

Every 20,000–25,000 km or Annually: Cabin Air Filter

EVs use cabin air filters just like gas vehicles — sometimes two of them (one for the HVAC system, one specifically for the battery thermal management system on some models). A clogged cabin filter reduces air quality inside the vehicle and can make the heating and cooling system work harder, which affects range in temperature extremes.

Check your owner's manual for your specific model. Tesla recommends annual replacement on most models. Many other manufacturers use a 20,000–25,000 km or 1–2 year interval.

Every 3–5 Years: 12V Auxiliary Battery

Every EV has a conventional 12V battery alongside the main high-voltage pack. This battery powers the vehicle's electronics — lights, locks, displays, computers — and in many EVs, it's required to "wake up" the high-voltage system. A failed 12V battery can leave you stranded even if the main pack is fully charged.

12V batteries in EVs tend to have a shorter lifespan than in gas vehicles because they're in a constant partial-charge state rather than being regularly topped up by an alternator. Most last 3–5 years. This is one of the most overlooked EV maintenance items.

At Manufacturer Intervals: Thermal Coolant

Most modern EVs use liquid cooling for the battery pack, motor, and inverter. This coolant degrades over time and needs replacement — typically every 5 years or 150,000–200,000 km, depending on the manufacturer. Neglecting thermal coolant can lead to reduced battery cooling efficiency and, in extreme cases, accelerated battery degradation.

As Needed: Wiper Blades, Washer Fluid, Tires

These are the same regardless of powertrain. Replace wiper blades annually or when streaking. Top up washer fluid seasonally. Replace tires when tread depth reaches 3/32"–4/32" (earlier heading into a BC winter).

What You Don't Need on a BEV

  • Engine oil changes
  • Spark plugs or ignition service
  • Timing belt or chain service
  • Transmission fluid (most EVs have a single-speed reduction drive)
  • Exhaust system service
  • Fuel filter or fuel injector service
  • Coolant for an engine (though thermal coolant for battery/motor still applies)
