Brakes are the most safety-critical system on your vehicle, and they're also one of the most anxiety-inducing repairs for drivers who aren't sure what they're dealing with. This guide covers the signs your brakes need attention, what a proper brake service involves, and what to expect when you bring your vehicle to a NAPA AUTOPRO shop in Port Coquitlam.

Warning Signs Your Brakes Need Service

Squealing or Squeaking

A high-pitched squeal when braking is almost always the wear indicator — a small metal tab built into the brake pad that contacts the rotor when the pad wears down to a safe minimum. It's designed to be annoying. When you hear it, you have time to book a service, but don't delay more than a few weeks.

Grinding

Grinding is more serious. It means the pad material is gone and metal is contacting metal — rotor and caliper bracket. This causes rotor damage and significantly extends the repair. What would have been a pad replacement is now a pad-and-rotor job. Don't ignore grinding.

Vibration When Braking

A pulsing or vibrating sensation through the brake pedal — or through the steering wheel — when braking is typically a sign of warped rotors. This happens when rotors get unevenly hot (from hard repeated braking or dragging brakes) or develop uneven deposits of pad material. Machining or replacing the rotors fixes it.

Soft or Spongy Pedal

If the brake pedal feels soft, goes further to the floor than usual, or has less resistance than before, this is a hydraulic issue — often air in the brake lines or a failing master cylinder. This needs immediate attention.

Pulling to One Side

Pulling left or right under braking usually indicates a sticking caliper — one side is applying more braking force than the other. It can also indicate uneven pad wear or a brake hose problem.

Brake Warning Light

The red brake warning light can mean low brake fluid, a parking brake left partially engaged, or a hydraulic pressure imbalance. If it comes on while driving with the parking brake off, have it checked the same day.

What a Brake Service Involves

At Blue Mountain AutoPro, every brake inspection starts with a thorough measurement — pad thickness, rotor thickness and run-out, caliper operation, brake hose condition, and brake fluid quality. We never recommend more than what's needed, and we show you the measurements.

A standard brake service typically includes one or more of:

  • Brake pad replacement — new NAPA-quality pads installed to spec
  • Rotor resurfacing or replacement — depending on remaining thickness and condition
  • Caliper service — cleaning, lubricating, and checking for sticking pistons
  • Brake fluid check and exchange — recommended every 2 years on all vehicles
  • Hardware replacement — clips, shims, and anti-squeal hardware replaced with new pads

How Long Do Brakes Last?

It depends entirely on driving style, vehicle weight, and terrain. In the Tri-Cities, where many drivers regularly navigate the hills of Port Moody or commute through stop-and-go traffic on the Lougheed or Mary Hill Bypass, front pads typically last 40,000–70,000 km. Rear pads often last longer. Rotors typically last through 1–2 pad changes before replacement.

EVs and hybrids are an exception — regenerative braking means friction brakes are used far less, and pads can last well over 100,000 km. However, rotors on EVs can corrode faster due to infrequent friction contact.

NAPA Warranty on Brake Service

All qualifying brake work at Blue Mountain AutoPro is covered by the NAPA Peace of Mind Warranty — 36 months / 60,000 km. That warranty is honoured at any NAPA AUTOPRO shop across Canada, so you're covered whether you're at home in Port Coquitlam or on a road trip to the Interior.
