Why EVs Are Harder on Suspension

An electric vehicle can weigh 20–30% more than a comparable gas car — the battery pack alone often adds 400–600 kg. All of that extra mass rides on the same shocks, struts, springs, and bushings, which means suspension components work harder and can wear faster.

Instant torque compounds it. The sudden load transfer under hard acceleration and regenerative braking stresses control arm bushings, ball joints, and tires far more than a gradual gas-engine pull. Even small alignment errors then chew through expensive low-rolling-resistance EV tires.

Keeping suspension tight and alignment precise isn't just about ride comfort — it protects your tire investment and your range. A properly aligned, well-damped EV rolls with less resistance and wears its tires evenly.

Signs Your EV Needs Suspension or Alignment Service

  • Uneven or rapid tire wear

Inner or outer edge wear is a classic sign of alignment that's out of spec

  • Pulling to one side or off-center steering

The car drifts or the steering wheel sits crooked when driving straight

  • Clunks or knocks over bumps

Worn bushings, ball joints, or sway bar links often announce themselves over rough roads

  • Bouncy, floaty, or harsh ride

Tired shocks and struts let a heavy EV wallow over bumps or crash through them

  • Noticeable range or efficiency drop

Misalignment adds rolling resistance and tire scrub, quietly costing you range

What We Service

nexdrive EV Suspension & Alignment Services

Precision Wheel Alignment

Four-wheel alignment to manufacturer specification using equipment that accommodates EV ride height and weight. Protects your tires and your range.

Shock & Strut Replacement

Shocks and struts work overtime on a heavy EV. We test damping performance and replace worn units to restore ride control and stability.

Bushings & Control Arms

Instant torque and regen load wear control arm bushings and ball joints. We inspect and replace worn components to eliminate clunks and restore precise handling.

Sway Bar & Steering Links

Sway bar links, tie rod ends, and steering components keep a heavy EV planted through corners. We check for play and replace worn links to tighten up the drive.

Springs & Ride Height

Sagging or broken springs change ride height and alignment on a weight-loaded EV. We inspect coil and air suspension and correct ride height to spec.

Full Suspension Inspection

Comprehensive check of shocks, struts, bushings, joints, and ride height — paired with an alignment check. Recommended yearly and after new tire installs.

EV Suspension & Alignment FAQ

Common Questions About EV Suspension

Do EVs wear out suspension faster than gas cars?
Often, yes. EVs are significantly heavier than comparable gas cars because of the battery pack, and instant torque puts extra load on suspension and tires. Shocks, struts, bushings, and control arm joints can wear faster, so periodic suspension checks are worthwhile.
How often should an EV get a wheel alignment?
We recommend checking EV alignment at least once a year, after any new tire installation, and any time you notice uneven tire wear or pulling. Because EVs are heavy and torque-rich, even small alignment errors can wear expensive low-rolling-resistance EV tires quickly.
Can you align a Tesla or other EV?
Yes. We perform precision four-wheel alignments to manufacturer specification for Tesla, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Chevrolet, Ford, and other EVs and hybrids using equipment that accommodates EV ride height and weight.
Why does alignment matter so much for EV range?
Misalignment increases rolling resistance and tire scrub, which directly reduces range and accelerates tire wear. Correct alignment keeps the tires rolling true, protecting both your range and the life of EV-rated tires.
My EV has air suspension — can you service it?
Yes. We diagnose and service air and adaptive suspension systems found on many EVs, including ride-height faults, leaks, and compressor issues, then confirm alignment once ride height is correct.
