EV Brake Service

EV & Hybrid Brake Service

EV brakes are different — and they need technicians who understand both regenerative and friction systems. We service the complete braking system on all electric and hybrid vehicles.

Regenerative Braking Changes Everything

In an electric or hybrid vehicle, slowing down is primarily handled by the drive motor running in reverse — converting kinetic energy back into electricity stored in the battery. This is regenerative braking, and it's one of the key factors in EV efficiency.

The friction brakes (pads, rotors, calipers) still engage during hard braking and at low speeds — but because they're used so much less than on a gas car, they behave differently and require a different service approach.

What's different about EV brakes

  • Pads last much longer — sometimes 2× as long as gas vehicles
  • Rotors corrode faster from infrequent friction contact
  • Brake fluid still degrades — and is often overlooked
  • Brake-by-wire systems need specialized diagnostic tools
  • Caliper pistons can seize from lack of use

Complete EV Brake Services

Brake Fluid Exchange

Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture over time, lowering its boiling point. On EVs, this is easily overlooked because the brakes feel fine. Tesla recommends every 2 years. We follow manufacturer schedules for all makes.

Rotor Resurfacing & Replacement

EV rotors corrode at the friction surface from disuse. Light surface rust is normal; significant pitting or uneven corrosion causes judder and noise. We inspect and replace rotors that have corroded beyond safe service limits.

Pad Inspection & Replacement

While EV brake pads last longer, they still wear and must be inspected. Pads that sit unused for long periods can also glaze, reducing effectiveness when the friction brakes are needed for hard stops.

Caliper Service

Rear calipers on EVs are particularly prone to seizing — the electric parking brake mechanism and infrequent use can cause piston retraction issues. We inspect, service, and replace calipers as needed.

Regen System Inspection

We check the regenerative braking system for fault codes, verify the blend between regen and friction braking is operating correctly, and inspect brake pedal feel for abnormalities.

Full Brake Inspection

Every EV service visit includes a complimentary brake inspection — pad thickness, rotor condition, caliper function, fluid condition, and regenerative system status. Know the full picture every visit.
